What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first visit to Back to Health Non-Surgical is a time to understand what is affecting your comfort, movement, and daily life. It is also your opportunity to ask questions and learn whether our approach may be appropriate for you. Dr. Charles Schuster and his team do not begin with a one-size-fits-all treatment schedule. Instead, your care starts with a conversation and a focused evaluation.
Our Charleston, Illinois, team wants you to know what to expect before you arrive. The steps below explain how we gather information, evaluate your needs, and discuss possible next steps.
BEFORE YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT
A little preparation can help you make the most of your first visit. Please bring information that gives Dr. Schuster a clearer picture of your health history and current concern. Helpful items may include:
- A list of current medications and relevant health conditions
- Recent imaging or reports related to the problem, if available
- Notes about when your symptoms began and what makes them better or worse
- Questions you want to discuss with Dr. Schuster
- Comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily during the examination
You can also review the new patient forms before your appointment. Completing the requested information carefully helps our team understand your history and keeps the conversation focused on what matters to you.
ARRIVING AT BACK TO HEALTH

When you arrive, our team will welcome you, review your paperwork, and help you get settled. Your first chiropractic visit is meant to be informative and unhurried. We want to understand the activities you are missing, the movements that are difficult, and the goals you hope to reach.
During your consultation, Dr. Schuster will ask about the location and pattern of your symptoms, past injuries, previous care, work demands, exercise, sleep, and other factors that may affect your condition. This conversation helps connect your symptoms to the mechanical and biological factors that may be contributing to the problem.
A FOCUSED EXAMINATION

Next, Dr. Schuster may evaluate posture, spinal or joint motion, balance, muscle function, reflexes, or other orthopedic and neurological findings relevant to your concern. The examination is tailored to the reason for your visit, so every patient may not receive the same tests.
If existing imaging is useful, Dr. Schuster will review it with your history and examination findings. Additional imaging may be recommended only when it can help clarify the problem, rule out a concern, or guide the next step. If your findings suggest that another healthcare provider should be involved, Dr. Schuster will explain that recommendation.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR FINDINGS
After the evaluation, Dr. Schuster will explain what he found in clear language. You should leave this part of the visit with answers to practical questions:
- What may be contributing to the problem?
- Is care at Back to Health an appropriate option?
- Which treatment choices may fit the findings and your goals?
- How will progress be measured and the plan adjusted?
Recommendations may include chiropractic care, non-surgical decompression, laser therapy, soft tissue work, home guidance, or a combination of services. For people with persistent spine or joint problems, Dr. Schuster may also discuss the clinic’s RESTORE™ Regenerative Spine Care approach. The specific plan depends on your history, examination, needs, and goals.
YOUR NEXT STEP IS BASED ON THE EVALUATION

Care is not automatically performed simply because you scheduled an evaluation. If treatment is appropriate, the team will explain the recommendation, expected visit experience, alternatives, and any questions you have before proceeding. You remain involved in each decision.
Depending on the findings and the time needed to review them, recommendations may be discussed during the first appointment or at a follow-up visit. You may also receive guidance about movement, positions, or activities to use or avoid while the next step is being determined.
START WITH A CONVERSATION
Knowing what to expect can make a first visit feel more comfortable. Our goal is to give you useful answers, a clear explanation of your options, and a plan that reflects what the evaluation actually shows.
